Catching up

Published by jayewalking at 11:17 pm under Therapy Edit This

Well, it’s been a busy week here and I’ve been feeling a little under the weather, so I haven’t posted about B’s appointments yet.  I’m happy to say that both went really well!  We are officially finished the More than Words program, but our SLP will continue to see B until after the other centre picks her up as a client fully.  Because B has made such great progress, she didn’t want to lose any of that momentum while waiting for our assessment and next steps with the other agency.

Overall, for speech, we were very pleased with the progress B has made in this program.  She is really talking now and expressing her feelings rather than having a screaming meltdown and/biting or hitting.  We still have a long way to go, but we’ve come a long long way from where we were.  And on a positive note, one of the other moms in the class gave her number to the SLP to ask me to call and set up a playdate for our kids.  This was the mom that I really felt I connected with because our kids are in similar situations.  I’ll probably call this weekend and see what we can plan.  The SLP also figured our kids would be a good match.

OT:  occupational therapy was a bit of a challenge.  We tried using a visual schedule which is basically a chart with the planned activities on it.  When one activity is done, the child pulls it off and puts it in the all done envelope.  B was not too keen on this chart as it had a lot on it.  The OT simplified it to a First/Then chart and it went a bit better.  It took some effort to get B involved in the current activities when all she really wanted to do was go on the platform swing.  She did very well with stringing some big wooden beads (the OT was very surprised with how fast she caught on!) and loved doing puzzles.  She wasn’t too keen on jumping on the trampoline, but that was mostly because she wanted to swing.

When I talked with the OT, she asked if I had noticed anything new.  I told her how B has been getting out of bed in the middle of the night and getting into bed with me.  She will lay down on me (never on Daddy-don’t know why) and then she goes to sleep again.  We think this may be one of those comfort things; she needs the pressure to take her to an optimal level and then she can go to sleep.  I’m hoping she grows out of this one although it generally doesn’t bother me because I will sleep through just about anything.  If I notice her, I take her back to her own bed (unless she’s pinning me down in which case I wake up Daddy so he can take her back to bed).

We also talked about the fact that she is still hitting/biting her older sister for no reason.  They’ll be sitting together watching TV and B will lean over and bite G on the leg or arm.  What we are going to try to do is redirect her to a shoulder tap to get her sister’s attention as this seems to be what she is wanting when she does this.  Of course, she’s 2, so she could just be trying to be a brat too Tongue out.

And that’s been our week in a nutshell.  We go back to see the SLP in two weeks and for OT, 1 month.  Next week we have a follow-up with the psychologist for a re-assessment.  I’m not holding my breath for a diagnosis, but it sure would be nice!Innocent

Thank you for the chuckle this morning! It’s so funny that we worry so much about them and then suddenly they just get it and go go go!

On the plus side, it sounds like you got your money’s worth on the speech therapy! Maybe the sign language will come back to them later on?

I’m so glad to hear that speech therapy helped with your nephews! I’m an auntie to triplet nephews–they are so much fun! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

It really is nice to read that you have such a positive outlook on things. I know first hand that running from one appointment to another can be exhausting and you seem to take it in stride. You’re a good mommy!

Aw, thanks, Momma! It certainly does get exhausting, but seeing the positive changes in her makes it all worth while :)
