Autism Awareness Month!

It’s Autism Awareness month and in recognition of that, I’ve decided to post a video of Jenny McCarthy being interviewed at a Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) conference in November 2008.  Like her or not, McCarthy is a vocal advocate for autism awareness.

Not everyone in the autism community agrees with her assertions that vaccines cause autism or that autism can be healed.  She makes a lot of sense though and she has researched autism extensively and the truth of the matter is that her son Evan is no longer autistic.  In the video, she asserts that not every treatment works for every child, but you don’t just give up, you try something else and keep trying.

I have not yet spent enough time researching McCarthy’s claims to be able to say that I agree or disagree with what she says.  On the surface, what she says makes a lot of sense.  I respect her for being such a strong advocate for her son and for other families dealing with autism.  Not a lot of celebrities would be willing to put their face out there and take on the medical community and the “experts” to get the information out there.

How do you feel about McCarthy’s claims?  I’m interested to know!
