Celebration Time: Meeting the Resource Worker!

Can I tell you just how excited I am?  I’m bouncing on the walls–not literally, but it sure is tempting to!  We met B’s resource worker today.  I had thought she was just going to help us with daycare, but guess what?  She is helping us with so much more!  She has given me about four different places where we can apply for subsidy for B.  I had no idea there were such programs!  One is from Easter Seals for a diaper subsidy for children over 3 who are still in diapers because of a special need–who knew?  One is for the Ontario government for a tax credit.  Wow!  I won’t bore you with all the details, but suffice it to say, I’ve never been so happy to have to do paperwork before.

Wow!  I can hardly sit still to type, I’m so excited.  Not only is the worker going to help us get B set up for daycare, she’s also going to lend us some of the items that were recommended as part of B’s sensory diet so that we can try them before we shell out money and buy it.  This way, if the tools don’t work, we won’t end up wasting our money.  She’s also going to be a kind of point person for all of the different therapists we see.  She’ll come to different programs with us and help us to figure out how to get the most out of them for B while we’re waiting for daycare.  And she’ll go into the daycare and later to the school to help her teachers to adapt programs for her.  Um…what else?  Wow, there was just so much great information she gave us.  And it was great to know that we’ve made the right steps for speech therapy and also occupational therapy.  Apparently, we were very lucky to get into the occupational therapy at the hospital because in our city occupatonal therapy has huge waiting lists.

Of course, I can’t get too far without talking about waiting lists!  B was only on the list for the resource worker for a month!  Somehow we lucked out, because earlier this year, it had been a year long wait.  A lot of the subsidies we’ll be applying for have waiting lists as well.  And of course day care does too.  But you know what?  I’m not too concerned with them.  Knowing that there are resources available while we wait makes all the difference.

And with that, I’m going to go bounce of the walls some more….
